Welcome To A Century of Glasgow
Welcome To A Century of Glasgow. This fascinating selection of photographs illustrates the extraordinary transformation that has taken place in Glasgow during the 20th century. The book offers an insight into the daily lives and living conditions of local people and gives the reader glimpses and details of familiar places during a century of unprecedented change. Many aspects of Glasgow's recent history are covered, famous occasions and individuals are remembered and the impact of national and international events is witnessed. The book provides a striking account of the changes that have so altered Glasgow's appearance and records the process of transformation. Drawing on detailed local knowledge of the community, and illustrated with a wealth of black-and-white photographs, this book recalls what Glasgow has lost in terms of buildings, traditions and ways of life. It also acknowledges the regeneration that has taken place and celebrates the character and energy of local people as they move through the first years of this new century and exciting century. A Century of Glasgow (Century of Scotland) (Century of Scotland) (Century of Scotland).

Welcome To The Villages Of Glasgow Scotland
Welcome To The Villages Of Glasgow Scotland. This work covers the dozen or so villages on Glasgow's south side to present an up-to-date picture of life there through the years. New material has been introduced to most chapters, and a map of each village is included. This is the story of how old villages were expanded and new villages formed to house the workforces for particular industries; for example Govanhill, laid out by William Dixon for coal miners and skilled ironworkers brought from Shropshire. It is also a glimpse into the industries, events, and famous (and infamous) residents: the railway men at Corkerhill and Polmadie; the women munition workers at Cathcart and Cardonald; the 47 children in a two-roomed adventure school in Gorbals, some accommodated in the kitchen bed; and the moments of deep despair when a whole community was bereaved by a disaster in a pit or on the river. Villages of Glasgow: The South Side.

Welcome To The River Clyde Scotland
Welcome To The River Clyde Scotland. Beginning deep in the hills of South Lanarkshire, the River Clyde twists her way for over 100 miles through a remarkably varied landscape, eventually flowing into the Firth of Clyde near to the towns of Gourock and Helensburgh. In between, the River Clyde journeys along a feral and spacious landscape, tumbles down huge waterfalls, courses past historic buildings, by world renowned shipyards, man-made lochs, a world heritage site, and the magnificent architecture of her buildings and bridges. It is an integral part of the Scottish landscape, one rich in wildlife, and with a history almost unparalleled. Through beautiful photographs and incisive text, The River Clyde, from the Source to the Sea, celebrates the outstanding beauty, scale and diversity of this magnificent river, the crucial part she has played in the development of Scotland's industry, the battles fought, the role she has played in the lives of many from Roman scotland times to present day, and the abundance of flora and fauna to be found by her banks in all seasons and weather. Welcome To Glasgow Necropolis Scotland
Welcome To Glasgow Necropolis Scotland. Modelled on Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, the Glasgow Necropolis first opened for burial in 1832 and has been a haunt for cemetery tourists ever since. Dominated by its memorial obelisk to John Knox, the Necropolis is a living testament to Victorian funerary excesses and the nineteenth century's obsession with death, sometimes referred to as the Cult of the Dead. Here, Ronnie Scott surveys the architecture of the Necropolis's monuments, graves and mausoleums and the architects who built them. And he also tells the stories of the folk who inhabit the Necropolis or City of the Dead, as the word necropolis translates. Unlike Pere Lachaise, the Necropolis in Glasgow may not be able to boast of being the last resting place of anyone quite as famous as Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison or Edith Piaf but it does have its share of celebrity corpses. By the middle of nineteenth century, anyone who was anyone in Glasgow was buried there or had a Necropolis monument erected to their memory. The designer of the Royal Yacht Britannia, industrialists like Charles Tennent and Lord Kelvin, a Polish freedom fighter, they're all here and all have their own interesting stories - as do some of the rather less well-respected occupants, such as the professor of anatomy who encouraged body-snatching. The architecture of the tombs, gravestones and memorials is as varied as the lives the citizens of the Necropolis led - and sometimes just as flamboyant. The men, such as Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, who designed Glasgow's city-centre buildings during the period when it was second only to London in terms of prosperity also had a hand in creating the Necropolis and their life stories are covered here too. Ronnie Scott is a Glasgow cemetery historian who has spent four years researching the Glasgow Necropolis for his PhD thesis. He regularly leads guided tours of the Glasgow Necropolis and gives presentations on cemetery development and body-snatching. Death by Design: The True Story of the Glasgow Necropolis.

Welcome To Perth Scotland
Welcome To Perth Scotland. Perth and Kinross, at the geographical heart of Scotland, contain buildings which range from the remains of a Roman line of forts and watch towers, the fort at Ardoch, of the first and second centuries, is one of the best preserved and least known of such structures in Britain, early historic hill forts, a remarkable array of carved stones erected by the warrior aristocracy of the sixth to ninth centuries, the wilfully inventive medieval Dunkeld Cathedral, and mottes, castles and tower houses, among them the island fortress of Lochleven Castle and Elcho Castle's assertion of baronial status. The grandiose funerary monuments of the seventeenth century at Scone Palace and the Kinoull Aisle presaged the 'court' classicism of Sir William Bruce, which is exemplified by his own mansion, garden and landscape at Kinross House. Blair Castle's mid-eighteenth century stucco work, unequalled in Scotland, celebrates the magnificence of the Dukes of Atholl, this display challenged in the early nineteenth century by the sumptuous Gothic palaces of Scone and Taymouth Castle. A multitude of smaller country houses embrace a variety of styles, classical, Italianate, castellated and Baronial, while Georgian and Victorian churches, many with superb stained glass, abound. Among towns and villages, Dunkeld is the epitome of a small Scottish burgh while the Royal burgh of Perth has expanded from its medieval core with the addition of late Georgian 'new towns' and civic and industrial monuments of the nineteenth century. Welcome To Islay and its Whiskies
Welcome To Islay and its Whiskies. Those who discover malt whisky quickly learn that the malts made on the Isle of Islay are some of the wildest and most characterful in the malt whisky spectrum. In Peat Smoke and Spirit, Islay's fascinating story is uncovered: from its history and stories of the many shipwrecks which litter its shores, to intimate descriptions of the beautiful wildlife, landscape and topography of the island. Interwoven through these different narrative strands comes the story of the whiskies themselves, traced from a distant past of bothies and illegal stills to present day legality and prosperity. The flavour of each spirit is analysed and the differences between them teased out, as are the stories of the notable men and women who have played such a integral part in their creation. Peat Smoke and Spirit is the last word on Islay and its whiskies. Peat Smoke and Spirit: A Portrait of Islay and its Whiskies: A Portrait of Islay and Its Whiskies

Welcome To Campbeltown Scotland
Tour Campbeltown Scotland. The Distilleries of Campbeltown: The Rise and Fall of the Whisky Capital of the World. Campbeltown was once the whisky capital of the world with 29 distilleries operating simultaneously in 1835. How had this remote fishing port and royal burgh become the epicentre of Scotland's greatest export? David Stirk reveals all in this engaging and well illustrated insight into the people who were the movers and shakers behind this huge industry. The origins lie in illicit distilling which was prevalent all over Kintyre in the late 18th century. Many women were involved in this business which made many ordinary folk very wealthy and out of these origins, the legal trade was established in 1817 with Campbeltown Distillery being the first of many. Over the course of the next two decades every street and corner in the burgh had a distillery or brewery built on it. The names were redolent of Kintyre history and placenames: Kinloch, Caledonian, Dalaruan, Lochhead, Longrow, Meadowburn, Burnside, Kintyre, Rieclachan, Union, Argyll, Glenramskill, Highland, Springbank and Albyn, to name only some. It is no idle boast that Campbeltown was the Victorian whisky capital of the world and just as great schemes rise, so do they fall. Ultimately the town's prosperity waned with the Great War, the depression, prohibition in the USA and the failure of local coal seams. Now only Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glen Gyle remain in production, solitary reminders of the once great whisky days of this Royal Burgh.
